Jeans are one of the favorite clothes for young people who are used for daily activities. Now jeans are increasingly developing both in terms of the model, design, and material of the jeans themselves, Inventor of Jeans namely Levi Strauss was born in Buttenheim, in the Franconian region of Bavaria, Germany on February 26, 1829. Levi Strauss is the son of Hirsch Strauss and Rebecca Strauss. At the age of 18, Levi Strauss and his mother and two sisters sailed to the United States to join his brothers Jonas and Louis, who had started a wholesale business. Levi's sister Fanny and her husband David Stern moved to St. Louis, Missouri, while Levi went to live in Louisville and sell business products owned by her siblings in Kentucky, United States. In January 1853, Levi Strauss became an American citizen. His family then decided to open a branch on the West Coast of San Francisco.
With a roll of canvas, Strauss tried to make a piece of work pants he was trying to sell to the miners in the area. It turns out that Strauss pants with canvas material sell well, many miners buy canvas pants from Strauss because pants from canvas are not easily damaged or torn and are durable. But there are still many who still don't like Strauss's processed canvas. The thing that made him begin to improvise by making from other materials ordered from Genoa, Italy. The spinners there called the material "genes" and Strauss changed its name to "Jeans" and Strauss began producing the first jeans and was given the brand "Levi’s". Their first design product was "Levi's 501". The first design product is reserved for the gold miners. These pants have 5 pockets, 2 at the back and 2 at the front, and 1 small pocket in the right front pocket.
Jeans originally came from Genoa, Italy where jeans were produced for naval purposes, as pants that could be worn wet or dry. The name of jeans itself is derived from the French language which refers to the blue pants from Genoa as Bleu de Gnes. Whereas in the Americas the arrival of jeans began in 1872. 20-year-old Levi Strauss intends to try his luck in New York. In his place of origin Strauss was a clothing seller. Strauss left for California armed only with a few pieces of textiles which were business items belonging to his brother that he would sell during his trip to the west. Because it was only armed with desperation, Levi Strauss finally arrived in California by selling all his goods except what was left was a roll of canvas.
In the 1930s, the popularity of jeans began to boost, this also can not be separated from the popularity of cowboy films. In a short time all the guys (young / old) fell in love with jeans and tried to imitate their idol in the film. Wearing jeans is indeed used to make a statement. In the 60s and 70s jeans were remade (starting with the bell-bottom shape, decorated with beads, embroidery and even painted) and became a symbol of casual appearance for a freer generation.
During World War II, it was the turn of American soldiers who liked to wear it while off duty. Another story in the 1950s. Jeans suddenly become a must have item among young children. What is the trigger? It turned out that none other than the cool appearance of James Dean, a young star who died young due to an accident when his name was actually famous. The trend rolled back in the 1960s and early 1970s. Hippy-style homeless lifestyle creates new creations. Hippy girls like to wear jeans adorned with embroidery or paint paintings. At the end of 1970, the world was shocked by the appearance of the beautiful Brooke Shields who became a model of Calvin Klein's jeans.
New Jeans really rose in the 1980s. At that time many famous designers such as Armani, Klein and Versace who raised jeans as a material that can look as elegant as other clothing materials. Indeed, jeans never popular in the grunge era of the 1990s. But quickly come back in fashion. Now people even wear jeans for a variety of occasions, including to down Friday, aka dressed casually to the office on Friday. In Indonesia, jeans are often worn with kebaya encim or worn at parties together with glamorous clothing such as silk. Today, jeans have entered our daily lives and are not just the monopoly of the workers as they were in the past. Millions of people still wear jeans to work, but this time not to work in mining but for office work.
Levi Strauss died on September 26, 1902, in San Francisco at the age of 73. He never married, so he left his business for his four nieces who were the children of his younger brother Fanny and her husband David Stern. He also left a legacy to a number of charities. He was buried in Colma, California.
James Dean and Marlon Brando made them popular in movies and everyone wanted to wear them. Jeans became a symbol of the youth rebellion during the 1950s and 1960s. College students started to wear them as a protest against the Vietnam War and the establishment. The new trousers were banned in American schools and sometimes in theatres and cinemas. As time went on jeans became more acceptable and today they are worn not only as casual clothes but also at formal events.
Other countries quickly started to get accustomed to wearing jeans too. American servicemen on duty in Europe and Japan often wore them when they were not on duty to show that they were Americans. The trousers showed the world a happier way of life, something that people needed, especially after what they had endured in World War II.
Jeans were also worn because they made people equal. You could afford them and they couldn’t be torn so easily. They had practical advantages as well. They didn’t need to be washed as often as other trousers and women didn’t need to iron them. This became more important as more and more women started working and had less time for housework.
Today jeans are an essential part of our lives. They are almost always washed a few times before being sold to give them their faded appearance.
